نقلت صحيفة «وول ستريت جورنال» عن مسؤولين في البيت الأبيض تأكيدهم أن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب يشعر بإحباط متزايد مع دخول حرب إيران شهرها الخامس، بعدما كان يعتقد في البداية أن الصراع سينتهي خلال أسابيع قليلة، في وقت بدأت الخيارات الدبلوماسية تتقلص.

انتخابات التجديد النصفي

ويشعر بعض مستشاري ترمب بالقلق من أن الحرب، التي أسفرت عن ارتفاع أسعار الطاقة وسقوط 16 عسكرياً، أصبحت تضعف فرص الجمهوريين في انتخابات التجديد النصفي القادمة. وخلال اجتماع عُقد أخيراً في البيت الأبيض، شنّ ترمب هجوماً لاذعاً على القادة الإيرانيين ووصفهم بمفردات حادة، وفقاً لما نقلته الصحيفة عن مصدر قال إنه سمع هذه التصريحات. ويسعى ترمب منذ أشهر إلى إنهاء الحرب تدريجياً. فقد أعلن وقف إطلاق النار في أبريل بعد أن هدد بإنهاء «الحضارة الإيرانية بأكملها». وفي يونيو، أعلن أن الولايات المتحدة وإيران وقعتا مذكرة تفاهم لإعادة فتح مضيق هرمز. لكن سرعان ما تبددت فترات الهدوء القصيرة وعاد الطرفان إلى القتال. وبحسب المصادر، ازداد تشكك الرئيس الأمريكي في الأيام الأخيرة من إمكانية التوصل إلى سلام دائم عبر المفاوضات مع إيران.

خيارات عسكرية أمام ترمب

وتعزز الولايات المتحدة قواتها وأسلحتها في الشرق الأوسط لمنح ترمب خيارات عسكرية أقوى في حال قرر التصعيد، إذ هدد في تصريحات نقلها موقع «أكسيوس»، بتصعيد كبير للحرب. من جانبها، قالت المتحدثة باسم البيت الأبيض، كارولين ليفيت: «إن الولايات المتحدة وقعت مذكرة تفاهم مع إيران، لكن طهران نقضتها، وأطلقت النار على سفن تجارية، وقتلت جنوداً أمريكيين. وأكدت أن الرئيس ترمب لن يقف مكتوف الأيدي ويسمح باستمرار هذا السلوك الإرهابي». وأضافت أن إيران تدفع ثمن سلوكها، وستواصل دفعه، إلى أن تجلس إلى طاولة المفاوضات بطريقة يراها الرئيس ترمب مُجدية.

تراجع الثقة في الدبلوماسية

ومع استمرار الحرب، تضاءلت ثقة ترمب في قدرة الولايات المتحدة وإيران على إيجاد حل دبلوماسي للنزاع. وقالت مصادر للصحيفة، إن ترمب أبلغ مستشاريه بصعوبة معرفة من يُمثّل القيادة العليا، وأنه في كل مرة تعتقد فيها الولايات المتحدة أنها أحرزت تقدماً على طاولة المفاوضات، تُواصل إيران هجماتها. وفي الشهر الماضي، كان ترمب مُتحمساً لاحتمال توقيع مذكرة تفاهم مع طهران لإعادة فتح مضيق هرمز، لدرجة أنه تجاهل حلفاءه الجمهوريين الذين قالوا إن الإيرانيين لن يلتزموا بالاتفاق، بحسب مسؤول أمريكي رفيع. وقال ترمب حينها إنه يريد إنهاء الأمر.

وأحدثت الحرب انقساماً في التحالف المحافظ الذي كان ترمب يسيطر عليه بشكل كامل، مما يُثير قلق بعض الجمهوريين المقربين من البيت الأبيض. واستغل حلفاء ترمب القدامى منصاتهم للتعبير عن مخاوفهم بشأن تأثير الحرب على الجمهوريين في انتخابات التجديد النصفي في نوفمبر. وقال مستشار ترمب السابق ستيف بانون: «لقد جرّنا نتنياهو إلى صراع مروع مليء بالأكاذيب. الناس يرون بأم أعينهم ما يحدث». وأفاد مسؤول رفيع في الإدارة الأمريكية للصحيفة، بأن ترمب أعرب عن استيائه من رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو، وأخبر مساعديه في بعض الأحيان أنه لا يرغب في التحدث إليه أو مقابلته. وأضاف المسؤول أن الإسرائيليين سعوا إلى تنظيم اجتماع بين نتنياهو وترمب.

Midterm Elections

Some of Trump’s advisors are concerned that the war, which has resulted in rising energy prices and the deaths of 16 military personnel, is weakening the Republicans’ chances in the upcoming midterm elections. During a recent meeting held at the White House, Trump launched a scathing attack on Iranian leaders, describing them in harsh terms, according to what the newspaper reported from a source who said they heard these remarks. Trump has been seeking to gradually end the war for months. He announced a ceasefire in April after threatening to end “the entire Iranian civilization.” In June, he announced that the United States and Iran had signed a memorandum of understanding to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, the brief periods of calm quickly dissipated, and both sides returned to fighting. According to sources, the U.S. president’s skepticism about the possibility of achieving a lasting peace through negotiations with Iran has increased in recent days.

Military Options for Trump

The United States is bolstering its forces and weapons in the Middle East to give Trump stronger military options should he decide to escalate, as he threatened in statements reported by Axios, with a significant escalation of the war. For her part, White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said, “The United States signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran, but Tehran violated it, fired on commercial ships, and killed American soldiers. She emphasized that President Trump will not sit idly by and allow this terrorist behavior to continue.” She added that Iran is paying the price for its actions and will continue to do so until it sits at the negotiating table in a way that President Trump finds productive.

Declining Confidence in Diplomacy

As the war continues, Trump’s confidence in the ability of the United States and Iran to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict has diminished. Sources told the newspaper that Trump informed his advisors of the difficulty in knowing who represents the top leadership, and that every time the United States believes it has made progress at the negotiating table, Iran continues its attacks. Last month, Trump was enthusiastic about the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding with Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, to the extent that he ignored his Republican allies who said the Iranians would not adhere to the agreement, according to a senior U.S. official. Trump then stated that he wanted to end the matter.

The war has caused a rift in the conservative coalition that Trump had previously dominated completely, raising concerns among some Republicans close to the White House. Trump’s old allies have used their platforms to express their fears about the impact of the war on Republicans in the midterm elections in November. Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon said, “Netanyahu has dragged us into a horrific conflict filled with lies. People see with their own eyes what is happening.” A senior U.S. administration official told the newspaper that Trump expressed his displeasure with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and has told his aides at times that he does not wish to speak with or meet him. The official added that the Israelis sought to arrange a meeting between Netanyahu and Trump.
