أثارت تصريحات الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب وإدارته خلال الأيام الأخيرة تساؤلات جديدة حول مستقبل العلاقة بين الولايات المتحدة وأوروبا، وسط مؤشرات على احتمال إعادة تقييم أسس الشراكة الدفاعية عبر الأطلسي.
وبحسب موقع أكسيوس، يأتي هذا التصعيد في وقت تستعد فيه واشنطن لاستقبال الأمين العام لحلف الناتو مارك روته، إذ من المقرر أن يلتقي الأمين العام لحلف شمال الأطلسي «الناتو» مارك روته الرئيس الأمريكي ترمب في البيت الأبيض، اليوم (الأربعاء)، لتهدئة التوتر بين واشنطن وأوروبا قبيل قمة قادة الحلف في أنقرة يوليو المقبل، في لقاء يُنظر إليه باعتباره من أكثر الاجتماعات أهمية منذ عودة ترمب إلى البيت الأبيض.
انتقادات مباشرة لحلفاء أوروبيين
وشهدت الأيام الماضية سلسلة من التصريحات الحادة تجاه قادة أوروبيين، فقد قال ترمب إن رئيسة الوزراء الإيطالية جورجيا ميلوني، طلبت منه التقاط صورة خلال قمة مجموعة السبع، وهو ما نفته ميلوني واعتبرته ادعاءً غير صحيح، لتندلع بعدها سجالات إعلامية وسياسية.
كما أثار الجدل بعدما أعلن خبر استقالة رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر قبل الإعلان الرسمي عنها، ما دفع وسائل إعلام بريطانية إلى وصف الخطوة بأنها غير معتادة دبلوماسياً.
وفي السياق ذاته، أعلن وزير الدفاع الأمريكي بيت هيغسيث أن واشنطن ستُجري مراجعة لمدة ستة أشهر لتقييم مساهمة الدول الأوروبية في أعباء الدفاع داخل الحلف، مع الإشارة إلى احتمال خفض الوجود العسكري الأمريكي في الدول التي لا تفي بالتزاماتها.
إيران في قلب الخلاف
وبحسب المواقف المعلنة داخل الإدارة الأمريكية، فإن أحد أسباب التوتر يعود إلى امتناع عدد من الدول الأوروبية عن الانخراط في الحرب ضد إيران، إضافة إلى رفض بعضها السماح باستخدام قواعدها العسكرية أو بنيتها اللوجستية.
ووجّه ترمب انتقادات لإيطاليا معتبراً أن رفض استخدام منشآتها العسكرية تسبب في تعقيدات لوجستية رغم المساهمة الأمريكية الكبيرة في الدفاع عن الحلفاء.
كما كرر وزير الخارجية الأمريكي ماركو روبيو ووزير الدفاع مواقف مشابهة تجاه دول أوروبية من بينها إسبانيا وفرنسا وبريطانيا، وقال هيغسيث إن «الناتو يجب أن يكون طريقاً باتجاهين»، في إشارة إلى ضرورة تقاسم الأعباء الأمنية.
إشارات إلى إعادة النظر في دور الناتو
وفي تصريحات سابقة، لمّح ترمب إلى إمكانية إعادة تقييم التزام بلاده تجاه الحلف، معتبراً أن الأزمة الأخيرة كشفت حدود الدعم الأوروبي.
في المقابل، أبدى ترمب مواقف أكثر إيجابية تجاه عدد من القادة الدوليين، من بينهم الرئيس الصيني شي جين بينغ، ورئيس الوزراء الهندي ناريندرا مودي، والرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين.
الأنظار تتجه إلى لقاء واشنطن
ويتجه الاهتمام الآن إلى لقاء ترمب وروته في البيت الأبيض، إذ يُتوقع أن يناقش الطرفان مستقبل الالتزامات الدفاعية الأمريكية، ومستوى الإنفاق الأوروبي داخل الحلف، إلى جانب تداعيات الملفات الأمنية الأخيرة، فيما يرى مراقبون أن الاجتماع قد يشكل اختباراً مهماً لمستقبل التوازن داخل التحالف الغربي في المرحلة القادمة.

According to Axios, this escalation comes at a time when Washington is preparing to welcome NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House today (Wednesday) to ease tensions between Washington and Europe ahead of the NATO leaders’ summit in Ankara next July, in a meeting viewed as one of the most significant since Trump’s return to the White House.
Direct Criticism of European Allies
In recent days, there has been a series of sharp statements directed at European leaders. Trump stated that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked him to take a photo during the G7 summit, which Meloni denied and considered an inaccurate claim, leading to subsequent media and political disputes.
He also stirred controversy after announcing the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer before the official announcement, prompting British media to describe the move as diplomatically unusual.
In the same context, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that Washington would conduct a six-month review to assess the contributions of European countries to the defense burdens within the alliance, indicating the possibility of reducing the U.S. military presence in countries that do not meet their commitments.
Iran at the Heart of the Dispute
According to the stated positions within the U.S. administration, one reason for the tension is the reluctance of several European countries to engage in the war against Iran, in addition to some refusing to allow the use of their military bases or logistical infrastructure.
Trump criticized Italy, arguing that the refusal to use its military facilities has caused logistical complications despite the significant U.S. contribution to defending allies.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Hegseth echoed similar sentiments towards European countries, including Spain, France, and Britain, with Hegseth stating that “NATO must be a two-way street,” referring to the necessity of sharing security burdens.
Signals of Reevaluating NATO’s Role
In previous statements, Trump hinted at the possibility of reassessing his country’s commitment to the alliance, considering that the recent crisis has revealed the limits of European support.
Conversely, Trump has expressed more positive positions towards several international leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Attention Turns to the Washington Meeting
Attention is now focused on the meeting between Trump and Rutte at the White House, where the two sides are expected to discuss the future of U.S. defense commitments, the level of European spending within the alliance, as well as the implications of recent security issues, with observers viewing the meeting as a significant test for the future balance within the Western alliance in the upcoming phase.
