في واحدة من أغرب قصص كأس العالم 2026، كاد مدافع منتخب الرأس الأخضر روبرتو «بيكو» لوبيز أن يفوّت فرصة تمثيل منتخب بلاده بسبب رسالة على موقع LinkedIn.

وتعود القصة إلى عام 2018 عندما تواصل معه المدرب السابق لمنتخب الرأس الأخضر روي أغواس عبر منصة LinkedIn، بعد اكتشاف أحقيته بتمثيل المنتخب من خلال والده المنحدر من الرأس الأخضر. إلا أن لوبيز تجاهل الرسالة ظناً منه أنها مجرد رسالة عشوائية أو بريد مزعج، خصوصاً أنها كانت مكتوبة باللغة البرتغالية التي لم يكن يجيدها في ذلك الوقت.

وبعد مرور نحو تسعة أشهر، عاد المدرب وأرسل رسالة جديدة باللغة الإنجليزية، ليسأل اللاعب إن كان قد اطلع على العرض السابق. حينها قرر لوبيز ترجمة الرسالة الأولى ليدرك أنه تلقى دعوة رسمية لتمثيل منتخب الرأس الأخضر.

وقال لوبيز في تصريحات سابقة إن حماسه كان كبيراً فور معرفته بمضمون الرسالة، مؤكداً أنه سارع بالاعتذار عن تجاهلها وأبدى رغبته الفورية في الانضمام للمنتخب.

ومنذ ذلك الحين، أصبح المدافع المولود في أيرلندا أحد العناصر الأساسية في منتخب الرأس الأخضر، وشارك في كتابة واحدة من أبرز قصص البطولة الحالية، بعدما ساهم في خروج منتخب بلاده بتعادل تاريخي أمام إسبانيا في ظهوره الأول بكأس العالم.

وتحوّلت رسالة LinkedIn التي كادت تُنسى إلى نقطة تحول غيّرت مسيرة اللاعب بالكامل، لتقوده في النهاية إلى أكبر مسرح كروي في العالم.

In one of the strangest stories of the 2026 World Cup, Cape Verde defender Roberto “Pico” Lopez almost missed the opportunity to represent his national team due to a message on LinkedIn.

The story dates back to 2018 when the former coach of the Cape Verde national team, Rui Aguas, reached out to him via LinkedIn after discovering his eligibility to represent the team through his father, who is from Cape Verde. However, Lopez ignored the message, thinking it was just a random message or spam, especially since it was written in Portuguese, a language he did not speak well at that time.

About nine months later, the coach sent a new message in English, asking the player if he had seen the previous offer. At that point, Lopez decided to translate the first message and realized that he had received an official invitation to represent the Cape Verde national team.

Lopez stated in previous remarks that he was very excited upon learning the content of the message, confirming that he quickly apologized for ignoring it and expressed his immediate desire to join the team.

Since then, the defender, who was born in Ireland, has become a key player for the Cape Verde national team, contributing to one of the most notable stories of the current tournament after helping his team achieve a historic draw against Spain in their first World Cup appearance.

The LinkedIn message that almost faded into memory became a turning point that completely changed the player’s career, ultimately leading him to the biggest football stage in the world.
