وجهت السلطات التايلندية تهمة القتل إلى مواطن أسترالي، بعدما عُثر على جثمان فتاة تبلغ من العمر 17 عامًا داخل حقيبة سفر أُلقيت بالقرب من خط للسكك الحديدية في مدينة باتايا الساحلية، في جريمة أثارت صدمة واسعة.
وقالت شرطة مدينة باتايا إن الضحية، تونشانوك دونهوملا، التي تُعرف بلقب «كيك»، عُثر على جثمانها داخل الحقيبة في الساعات الأولى من صباح السبت، وذلك بعد ساعات من الإبلاغ عن اختفائها.
وأوضحت الشرطة أنها ألقت القبض على الأسترالي سايمون بيتر كارمان في مطار سوفارنابومي الدولي في بانكوك، بينما كان يستعد، بحسب السلطات، لمغادرة البلاد.
ويواجه كارمان اتهامات بالقتل، إضافة إلى نقل أو إخفاء جثمان، واصطحاب قاصر لأغراض جنسية، إلا أنه نفى جميع الاتهامات، مؤكدًا أنه تصرف دفاعًا عن النفس.
ووفقًا لبيان صادر عن شرطة باتايا، أظهرت كاميرات المراقبة دخول كارمان والفتاة إلى إحدى الشقق السكنية في الساعة الثالثة والنصف فجر الخميس، فيما رصدته الكاميرات لاحقًا وهو يغادر بمفرده مساء اليوم نفسه حاملًا حقيبة سفر كبيرة، قبل أن ينقلها على دراجة نارية باتجاه منطقة تقع قرب خط للسكك الحديدية.
وألقت الشرطة القبض على المشتبه به في مطار بانكوك عند الساعة 1:15 فجر السبت، قبل نحو 15 دقيقة فقط من العثور على جثمان الفتاة داخل الحقيبة.
وبحسب وسائل إعلام محلية، قال كارمان للمحققين إنه اتفق مع الفتاة على دفع 1000 بات تايلندي مقابل خدمات جنسية، إلا أن خلافًا نشب بينهما بعد وصولهما إلى شقته عندما عرض عليها نصف المبلغ فقط.
كما زعم خلال التحقيقات أن الفتاة «اختفت من الغرفة» أثناء نومه، فيما أكد للشرطة أنه لم يقتلها.
وفي مقطع فيديو صُور أثناء احتجازه، وجه كارمان رسالة إلى أسرة الضحية قال فيها: «أشعر بالحزن لما حدث لابنتكم، الأمر كان خارجًا عن إرادتي، أعلم أنكم تشعرون بالحزن والغضب، وأنا كذلك».
وأضاف: «أرجو أن تُبلغوا الفتيات الأخريات بضرورة توخي الحذر».
من جانبه، قال قائد شرطة باتايا، العقيد أنيك سراثونغيو، إن آثار خدوش بالأظافر وُجدت على جسد المتهم، وهي تتوافق مع وقوع اشتباك، لكنه لا يزال ينكر ارتكاب جريمة القتل.
وعندما سُئل في مقطع مصور عن تلك الخدوش، أجاب ساخرًا بأنها ربما تكون ناجمة عن «عنكبوت».
وقالت أسرة الضحية إن تونشانوك كانت الابنة الوحيدة لوالدها، وكانت تقيم معه ومع زوجته في إقليم كالاسين شمال شرقي تايلند، قبل أن تسافر إلى باتايا في 16 يونيو لقضاء عطلة مع إحدى صديقاتها.
وأعرب والدها، ثونغشاي دونهوملا، عن حزنه الشديد، قائلًا إن ابنته كانت تعتمد على نفسها وتحرص دائمًا على مساعدته.
أما زوجة والدها، أورادي بوساراكوم، فقالت إن الأسرة كانت تخشى سماع النبأ الأسوأ منذ اختفاء الفتاة، مضيفة أن الحزن سيطر عليهم بعد تأكيد وفاتها.
وبموجب القانون التايلندي، قد يواجه المتهم عقوبة الإعدام في حال إدانته بتهمة القتل، فيما لا تزال التحقيقات والإجراءات القضائية مستمرة.
The Thai authorities have charged an Australian citizen with murder after the body of a 17-year-old girl was found inside a suitcase discarded near a railway line in the coastal city of Pattaya, in a crime that has sparked widespread shock.
Pattaya police stated that the victim, Tonchanok Dunhumla, known by the nickname “Kik,” was found dead inside the suitcase in the early hours of Saturday morning, just hours after she was reported missing.
The police explained that they arrested the Australian Simon Peter Carman at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok as he was preparing, according to authorities, to leave the country.
Carman faces charges of murder, as well as transporting or concealing a body, and taking a minor for sexual purposes, but he denied all charges, asserting that he acted in self-defense.
According to a statement from Pattaya police, surveillance cameras showed Carman and the girl entering an apartment at 3:30 AM on Thursday, while the cameras later recorded him leaving alone that same evening carrying a large suitcase, before he transported it on a motorcycle towards an area near a railway line.
The police arrested the suspect at Bangkok Airport at 1:15 AM on Saturday, just about 15 minutes before the girl’s body was found inside the suitcase.
According to local media, Carman told investigators that he had agreed with the girl to pay 1,000 Thai Baht for sexual services, but a dispute arose between them after they arrived at his apartment when he offered her only half the amount.
He also claimed during the investigations that the girl “disappeared from the room” while he was sleeping, while he assured the police that he did not kill her.
In a video recorded during his detention, Carman sent a message to the victim’s family saying: “I feel sad about what happened to your daughter; it was beyond my control. I know you feel sad and angry, and so do I.”
He added: “I hope you inform other girls to be careful.”
For his part, the Pattaya police chief, Colonel Anik Sarathongyu, stated that scratch marks were found on the suspect’s body, which are consistent with a struggle, but he still denies committing the murder.
When asked in a video clip about those scratches, Carman sarcastically replied that they might have been caused by a “spider.”
The victim’s family stated that Tonchanok was her father’s only daughter and lived with him and his wife in Kalasin province in northeastern Thailand before traveling to Pattaya on June 16 for a holiday with a friend.
Her father, Thongchai Dunhumla, expressed his deep sorrow, saying that his daughter was independent and always made an effort to help him.
Her stepmother, Oradi Pusarakum, said that the family had been fearing the worst news since the girl went missing, adding that grief took over them after her death was confirmed.
Under Thai law, the accused could face the death penalty if convicted of murder, while investigations and legal proceedings are still ongoing.
