دخل الحزب الديمقراطي الأمريكي مرحلة حرجة قبل أشهر من انتخابات التجديد النصفي للكونغرس، بعد إعلان المرشح الديمقراطي لمجلس الشيوخ عن ولاية ماين، غراهام بلاتنر، تعليق حملته الانتخابية تمهيداً للانسحاب، إثر اتهامات بالاغتصاب والاعتداء الجسدي، في تطور يهدد إحدى أهم فرص الحزب لانتزاع مقعد جمهوري حاسم واستعادة الأغلبية في مجلس الشيوخ، وفقاً لشبكتي «سي إن إن وإكسيوس».

وجاء قرار بلاتنر بعدما اتهمته امرأة باغتصابها قبل نحو خمس سنوات عندما كان في حالة سكر، فيما اتهمته امرأة أخرى بالاعتداء الجسدي، إضافة إلى تقارير سابقة نشرتها صحيفة نيويورك تايمز تحدثت عن سلوك مقلق تجاه نساء ارتبط بهن عاطفياً. وينفي بلاتنر جميع الاتهامات، معتبراً أنها استُخدمت لإقصائه سياسياً.

وفي رسالة مصورة استمرت 11 دقيقة، أعلن بلاتنر تعليق حملته، مؤكداً أن استمراره لم يعد يخدم الحركة السياسية التي يمثلها، لكنه وجه في الوقت نفسه هجوماً حاداً إلى قيادة الحزب الديمقراطي، متهماً المؤسسة الحزبية باستغلال الاتهامات لتجريده من التمويل، والوصول إلى قواعد بيانات الناخبين، وإضعاف حملته. وطالب بأن تكون عملية اختيار المرشح البديل «شفافة وديمقراطية وتحترم إرادة الناخبين».

وبحسب «سي إن إن»، يملك الحزب الديمقراطي في ولاية ماين مهلة حتى 27 يوليو لاختيار مرشح جديد، فيما أعلن بالفعل عقد مؤتمر ترشيحي لهذا الغرض، وسط انتقادات من بعض التيارات التقدمية التي ترى أن الآلية المقترحة قد تتجاهل إرادة القواعد الشعبية.

ويمثل انسحاب بلاتنر ضربة سياسية كبيرة للديمقراطيين، إذ كانت ولاية ماين تُعد إحدى أبرز الفرص لإزاحة السيناتور الجمهورية سوزان كولينز، في سباق يحتاج فيه الحزب إلى تحقيق مكاسب صافية بأربعة مقاعد لاستعادة الأغلبية في مجلس الشيوخ، وفقاً لـ«إكسيوس».

وكان بلاتنر قد صعد سريعاً داخل الحزب بفضل خطابه المناهض للمؤسسة السياسية، ونجح في الفوز بالانتخابات التمهيدية بنحو 72% من الأصوات، بعدما تفوق على منافسيه في استطلاعات الرأي وجمع التبرعات، ما دفع بعض التقدميين إلى اعتباره وجهاً صاعداً يمكن أن يلعب دوراً وطنياً مستقبلاً.

لكن سلسلة الفضائح المتلاحقة، التي شملت منشورات مثيرة للجدل، ورسائل ذات محتوى جنسي، ووشماً أثار انتقادات بسبب تشابهه مع رموز نازية، ثم اتهامات الاعتداء الجنسي، دفعت كبار قادة الحزب إلى سحب دعمهم. وطالب زعيم الأغلبية الديمقراطية في مجلس الشيوخ تشاك شومر بانسحابه، فيما أعلن كل من بيرني ساندرز، وإليزابيث وارن، ورو خانا، وروبن جاليجو، سحب تأييدهم له.

وتشير نتائج استطلاع أجرته صحيفة نيويورك تايمز ومعهد سيينا للأبحاث إلى أن الديمقراطيين ما زالوا قادرين على المنافسة في عدد من الولايات، إلا أنهم لا يملكون حتى الآن تقدماً كافياً يضمن استعادة الأغلبية، ما يجعل خسارة مرشح بحجم بلاتنر في ولاية محورية مثل ماين انتكاسة إضافية في معركة انتخابية تُعد من الأكثر حساسية قبل الانتخابات الرئاسية القادمة.

The American Democratic Party has entered a critical phase months ahead of the midterm congressional elections, following the announcement by Democratic Senate candidate from Maine, Graham Platner, that he is suspending his campaign in preparation for withdrawal, amid allegations of rape and physical assault. This development threatens one of the party’s most significant opportunities to seize a crucial Republican seat and regain the majority in the Senate, according to CNN and Axios.

Platner’s decision came after a woman accused him of raping her nearly five years ago while he was intoxicated, and another woman accused him of physical assault, in addition to previous reports published by The New York Times that discussed troubling behavior towards women he had been romantically involved with. Platner denies all the allegations, claiming they were used to politically marginalize him.

In an 11-minute video message, Platner announced the suspension of his campaign, asserting that his continuation no longer serves the political movement he represents. However, he simultaneously launched a sharp attack on the Democratic Party leadership, accusing the party establishment of exploiting the allegations to strip him of funding, access to voter databases, and weaken his campaign. He demanded that the process of selecting an alternative candidate be “transparent, democratic, and respectful of the will of the voters.”

According to CNN, the Democratic Party in Maine has until July 27 to choose a new candidate, and a nomination conference has already been announced for this purpose, amid criticism from some progressive factions who believe the proposed mechanism may overlook the will of the grassroots.

Platner’s withdrawal represents a significant political blow to the Democrats, as Maine was considered one of the prime opportunities to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins in a race where the party needs to achieve a net gain of four seats to regain the majority in the Senate, according to Axios.

Platner had quickly risen within the party thanks to his anti-establishment rhetoric and successfully won the primary election with about 72% of the votes, outperforming his rivals in polls and fundraising, which led some progressives to view him as a rising figure who could play a national role in the future.

However, a series of successive scandals, which included controversial posts, sexually explicit messages, and a tattoo that drew criticism for resembling Nazi symbols, followed by sexual assault allegations, prompted senior party leaders to withdraw their support. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for his withdrawal, while Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ro Khanna, and Ruben Gallego all announced their withdrawal of support for him.

Survey results conducted by The New York Times and the Siena College Research Institute indicate that Democrats are still capable of competing in several states, but they currently do not have sufficient momentum to ensure regaining the majority, making the loss of a candidate like Platner in a pivotal state like Maine an additional setback in an election battle that is considered one of the most sensitive ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.
