The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has sounded the alarm, warning of the increasing cases of gonorrhea that do not respond to the antibiotic “Ceftriaxone,” coinciding with the highest recorded infection rates since the start of epidemiological surveillance systems in EU countries and the European Economic Area.

Record Numbers

The Centre explained in a recent report that more than 106,000 confirmed cases of gonorrhea were recorded in 2024, the highest number observed since monitoring the disease in Europe, reflecting a notable rise in its prevalence.

Resistant Strains

The report indicated the detection of increasing strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria, which cause gonorrhea, that have shown resistance to the antibiotic “Ceftriaxone,” currently the recommended first-line treatment, warning that the continued spread of these strains could limit future treatment options.

The Centre affirmed that the growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics poses an increasing challenge to public health, amid concerns about the spread of strains that are difficult to treat.

Cross-Border Transmission

The report highlighted that Southeast Asian countries are among the main sources of antibiotic-resistant strains being transmitted to Europe, raising concerns among health authorities about the cross-border spread of infections.

Reasons for the Increase

For his part, Italian dermatologist and venereologist Emanuele Trovatto attributed the record rise in sexually transmitted infections in Europe to an increase in sexual relations with casual partners, noting that the widespread use of dating apps may be one of the factors contributing to this trend.

He added that changes in social and behavioral patterns, along with a lack of adherence to preventive measures and early testing, have contributed to the increased rates of infection transmission in recent years.

Serious Complications

Gonorrhea is one of the most commonly transmitted sexually transmitted infections worldwide, caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria, and can affect both men and women. If not treated properly, it can lead to serious complications, including infertility, reproductive system infections, and an increased risk of transmitting certain other types of infections.

The World Health Organization has repeatedly warned of the increasing resistance of gonorrhea bacteria to antibiotics, emphasizing that the continued emergence of strains that are less responsive to traditional treatments may make the disease more difficult to treat in the coming years.
