في مشهد بدا وكأنه مقتبس من فيلم بوليسي، أنهت السلطات الأمريكية رحلة هروب استمرت لأكثر من عقدين، بعدما تمكنت من القبض على طبيب تخدير سابق ظل متوارياً عن الأنظار منذ 2005، مستخدماً هويات مزيفة ووسائل متطورة لإخفاء آثاره، قبل أن تنتهي مغامرته على متن قارب شراعي قبالة الساحل الشرقي للولايات المتحدة.
وأعلنت السلطات، وفقاً لما أوردته صحيفة ديلي ميل، أن رونالد إل. فيشر (70 عاماً) أُلقي القبض عليه بواسطة قوات المارشالات الأمريكية، بعد معلومات استخباراتية جديدة قادت المحققين إلى مكان وجوده، حيث كان يعيش على متن قارب شراعي يبلغ طوله 56 قدماً بالقرب من سواحل نيويورك ونيوجيرسي.
وكشفت التحقيقات أن فيشر كان يستخدم اسماً مستعاراً هو «ريتشارد غرايدون»، ضمن سلسلة من الهويات الوهمية التي اعتمد عليها خلال سنوات فراره، في محاولة لإخفاء هويته والابتعاد عن أعين السلطات.
وخلال مداهمة موقع إقامته، عثر المحققون على كتب تتناول أساليب الإفلات من أجهزة إنفاذ القانون، إلى جانب أدلة تشير إلى استخدامه تقنيات رقمية متقدمة لإخفاء نشاطه الإلكتروني وعناوين الإنترنت الخاصة به، بحسب ما نقلته وسائل إعلام أمريكية عن مكتب الادعاء العام.
وتعود بداية القضية إلى 2005، عندما اختفى فيشر من ولاية رود آيلاند أثناء محاكمته في قضية اعتداء جنسي تعود أحداثها إلى 2003.
وتتعلق القضية باتهامات تقدمت بها شيريل جينجيريتش، التي أكدت أن الاعتداء وقع داخل يخت كان يملكه فيشر ويرسو في مرسى بمدينة بورتسموث، عقب تعارف بينهما عبر الإنترنت.
ورغم هروبه قبل صدور الحكم، أُدين فيشر غيابياً بتهمة الاعتداء الجنسي من الدرجة الأولى، وأصبح مطلوباً للعدالة بعد تخلفه عن حضور جلسات المحكمة.
وقبل فراره، بعث رسالة إلكترونية إلى محاميه حملت عنوان «وداعاً»، أوضح فيها عزمه مغادرة الولايات المتحدة لتجنب الإدانة، مؤكداً نيته بدء حياة جديدة خارج البلاد.
وطوال سنوات اختفائه، وصفته السلطات بأنه بحّار محترف يتمتع بخبرة واسعة وعلاقات دولية ساعدته على التنقل مستخدماً هويات مختلفة، فيما ظهرت قضيته في برنامج «أكثر المطلوبين في أمريكا» بعد تلقي عدة بلاغات عن أماكن يُشتبه بوجوده فيها.
وانتهت رحلة المطاردة بعملية أمنية مشتركة شاركت فيها فرقة ملاحقة الهاربين العنيفين في رود آيلاند، ومكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي (FBI)، وقوات المارشالات الأمريكية، إلى جانب خفر السواحل.
وأكدت السلطات أن نتائج فحص بصمات الأصابع حسمت هوية الموقوف، وأثبتت أنه بالفعل رونالد إل. فيشر، المطلوب منذ أكثر من 20 عاماً على خلفية قضية الاعتداء الجنسي.
In a scene that seemed straight out of a crime movie, U.S. authorities ended a more than two-decade-long escape, managing to apprehend a former anesthesiologist who had been in hiding since 2005, using fake identities and advanced methods to cover his tracks, before his adventure ended aboard a sailboat off the eastern coast of the United States.
Authorities announced, according to the Daily Mail, that Ronald L. Fisher (70) was arrested by U.S. Marshals after new intelligence led investigators to his location, where he was living on a 56-foot sailboat near the shores of New York and New Jersey.
Investigations revealed that Fisher had been using an alias, “Richard Graydon,” among a series of fake identities he relied on during his years on the run, in an attempt to conceal his identity and stay out of the authorities’ sight.
During a raid on his residence, investigators found books discussing methods of evading law enforcement, along with evidence indicating he used advanced digital techniques to hide his online activities and internet addresses, according to U.S. media reports from the Attorney General’s office.
The case dates back to 2005, when Fisher disappeared from Rhode Island during his trial for a sexual assault case dating back to 2003.
The case involves allegations made by Cheryl Gingerich, who claimed that the assault occurred inside a yacht owned by Fisher, docked in Portsmouth, after they met online.
Despite fleeing before the verdict was issued, Fisher was convicted in absentia of first-degree sexual assault and became a wanted fugitive after failing to attend court sessions.
Before his escape, he sent an email to his lawyer titled “Goodbye,” in which he expressed his intention to leave the United States to avoid conviction, confirming his desire to start a new life outside the country.
Throughout his years of hiding, authorities described him as a professional sailor with extensive experience and international connections that helped him move using different identities, while his case appeared on the “Most Wanted in America” program after receiving several tips about suspected locations of his presence.
The chase ended with a joint operation involving the Violent Fugitive Task Force in Rhode Island, the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and the Coast Guard.
Authorities confirmed that fingerprint analysis confirmed the identity of the detainee, proving that he was indeed Ronald L. Fisher, wanted for over 20 years in connection with the sexual assault case.
